Winterbourne Botanic Garden

Inside the hazelnut tunnelA beautiful seven acre Arts & Crafts garden, only minutes from Birmingham city centre. Winterbourne, a Grade 11 listed garden, has many interesting features to discover. These include colour themed borders, an unusual hazelnut tunnel a Japanese Bridge, stream lawn and display glasshouses.

Not to be missed is our extensive Rose collection in the walled garden, one of two National Collections held at the garden.

Winterbourne House was built in 1903 for John and Margaret Nettlefold; Margaret Nettlefold designed the garden, inspired by the books and garden designs of Gertrude Jekyll. Winterbourne was later owned by Harry Wheelock, a Birmingham stockbroker, and in 1925 was sold to another Birmingham businessman, John MacDonald Nicolson. Nicolson, a keen gardener developed many new areas, including a scree garden. Nicolson died in 1944 and bequeathed the house and garden to the University. The garden became the University’s Botanic Garden and new areas for teaching and plant conservation were developed within the historic layout.

The Coach House Gallery hosts monthly exhibitions of art, photography and mixed media based on plant themes.
