Update on meetings and congratulations

Congratulations to Carol Gordon, Celia Scottow and Jane Wilkes who had paintings accepted and displayed on the recent SBA Plantae Exhibition which was held on line again for the second year.

Unfortunately due to the delay in the re-opening of indoor meetings the BSBA Annual General Meeting will now take place on Sunday August 15th 2021. The plan is to hold the AGM in the morning and use the afternoon to catch up with everyone and see some of the things we have been keeping busy with over ‘lockdown’

Morton Hall & Worcester Exhibition

On Wednesday 26th May some members visited the gardens at Morton Hall near Redditch, private gardens open by appointment. The approach to the hall was through meadow that was filled with buttercups. After an introductory talk on the history of the house and garden we started our tour at the Japanese stroll garden. Here was a typical Tea House and the waters edge was lined by candelabra primula. There are seven individual gardens, including a more formal area and a vegetable garden all designed to give colour from March until October. The gardens were stunning, packed with interesting perennials, roses, clematis and shrubs and the views across the surrounding valley such a surprise. A lovely afternoon finished with tea and cake.

Exhibition – Botanical Treasures: Inspiration from Nature in Porcelain and on Paper. From 27th May until 31st October at the Museum of Royal Worcester during the museum opening hours. This is an exhibition between the Museum and the Gloucestershire Society for Botanical Illustration (GSBI). The artworks displayed alongside the museums collections of porcelain. There will be artist demonstrations from GSBI members every other week. One of our society members Carol Hardie will be demonstrating on Saturday 3rd July and Saturday 21st August.

Characteristics of Trees in Spring Workshop

On 24th April 2021 some members of the society took part in a Zoom workshop with Sarah Morrish. The topic was ‘Characteristics of Trees in Spring. Twigs and Bursting Buds in Pen and Ink’. Sarah gave a comprehensive talk on the key features to look for on winter twigs which was accompanied with a handout e-mailed prior to the talk. This was followed by a demonstration in pen and ink of an outline and stippling of a bursting horse chestnut bud. Members found this workshop inspirational.

We are now in the last two weeks of our exhibition at Weston park. There will be demonstrations in the Granary Art Gallery. The feed back from visitors has been very positive.

Update March 2021 and first workshop

Water droplets with Ann Swan – 10 members had a Zoom workshop with Ann Swan on 18th March. This was a coloured pencil workshop with Ann demonstrating as we followed, it was amazing how much was achieved in the two hour period.

Another Zoom workshop by Sarah Morrish will be held on 24th April the topic is ”Buds and Twigs”

Our exhibition ‘Flora Mundi’ which has been in place at Weston Park since the end of October should open on the 12th April until the 27th May 2021. We are now hopeful that the public will be able to see our work.

We have planned that our meetings will resume on 27th June with our AGM and continue monthly following, this obviously it depends on Covid lockdown restrictions being lifted according to the government plan.

If the Open Studios event takes place at Stirchley in September we will be taking part, there are no details at present about the dates.
