Attending Maureen Hallahan’s calligraphy workshop on italics was an inspiring and enjoyable experience. The workshop began with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental strokes and techniques that define italic calligraphy. Watching Maureen’s deft hand and sweeping pen strokes was mesmerising as she brought the art of italic script to life.
Maureen’s ability to break down each letter of the alphabet into manageable steps made the learning process smooth and enjoyable. She provided ample time for us to practice and refine our technique whilst offering personalised guidance and feedback, which was both constructive and encouraging.

As botanical artists, many participants found that skills such as precision, controlled strokes, and an appreciation for composition were mirrored in the techniques of calligraphy, which ensured rapid progress.
Maureen’s passion for the craft was infectious and inspiring for everyone. We hope that she will join us again to explore different scripts next year.
