August Workshop – Silverpoint Drawing Workhop with Lynn Hughes

August 26, 2025

Lynn’s beautiful array of detailed Silver Point sketchbooks provided insight and inspiration into this unique craft. In particular, the illustrations of her granddaughters which were ethereal and delicate.

The workshop was well organised. We enjoyed the potted history of Silver Point and the opportunity to look at an assortment of books on display to explore the subject in more detail. We were given a thoughtful selection of materials: reference images, two kinds of prepared paper, and two styluses; one sleek and mechanical with silver wire, the other handmade using copper wire, bamboo, and jute.

Lynn offered practical advice on sourcing materials and demonstrated how to prepare ground paper using gum arabic, white zinc gouache, and water, alongside comparisons with commercially available alternatives. The solid silver stylus was a striking example of the medium’s elegance.
It was a lovely, relaxing, and engaging day learning a new artistic process. Many thanks to Lynn for sharing her expertise with such clarity and generosity. Everyone came away with new skills, fresh inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for this beautiful, historic medium. Antoinete Hasson
